What on earth is Elf on the Shelf?
Everything you need to know about this cheeky little Christmas Elf!
So have your children come home yet, talking about “Elf on the Shelf” ? Well it seems to be taken the UK by storm this year!
Where did Elf on the Shelf come from?
It is huge in the USA and has been for many years. It was created by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell, and illustrated by Coë Steinwart. The Elf on The Shelf book was self published in 2005.
The Elf on The Shelf book tells a Christmas story which is actually written in rhyme. It explains how Father Christmas knows which children are naughty and which are nice, by sending a scout elf so they can watch over them and report back to Father Christmas before Christmas Day.
What is Elf on the Shelf?
It’s a little toy elf made of a plastic head and felt body. The Elf on the Shelf book comes with the Elf and in a box and you buy them from an ‘adoption centre’. Although this year you can buy Naughty Little Elves too!
So on the 1st December your scout elf will be sent by Father Christmas and arrive at your home. The family then adopts the elf, and gives the Elf a name. (We are running a competition for the best Elf name!) This little elf watches the behaviour of the chilren and reports whether they are naughty or nice each night.
Everything morning, the elf returns to sit in a new spot in your home. The children need to find the elf..sometimes the little elf can be a little naughty too..leaving footprints in the butter or tinsle on the ceiling! Your elf asks for your help with cetain chores or activities.
On Christmas Eve your elf returns to the North Pole until next year.

What are The Elf on The Shelf rules
If you have a look at The Elf on The Shelf offical website: www.elfontheshelf.com, there are two rules that you need to follow:
Rule No 1: Elves cannot be touched.
This is because their magic is very fragile. The elves only get their magic once they are adopted and named. The magic allows them to travel back and forth from The North Pole.If the elf is touched they will lose their magic power.
Rule No 2: Elves canot speak or move while anyone is awake.
They must watch and listen to what the children are doing.
